'Downton Abbey' is set to return after eight years with its historical detail about the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: British historical TV dramas are known for their captivating storytelling, talented ensemble cast, and meticulous attention to detail. These show timelines to completely different eras, offering a glimpse into pivotal moments in British history. As such is the case with the huge ITV period drama, ‘Downton Abbey’. The show is set to return after eight years with its stunning historical detail about the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants living at Downton Abbey.

The announcement of the seventh season sent waves of excitement among the fan base and reignites their passion for captivating British Drama. The period drama is ready to make its television comeback. Although the cast is not yet finalized as the TV bosses are working to lure back its established cast such as Michelle Dockery, Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Elizabeth McGovern, Joanne Forggatt, Allen Leech, and many others. The crisp plotlines with compelling characters generated six seasons which ended in 2015 and two movie spin-offs. Well, that’s a load of fame and triumph for the show’s producers Julian Fellowes, Gareth Neame, and Rebecca Eaton as well as the amazing cast.

Comeback of ‘Downton Abbey’ after eight years

The popular show which aired for six seasons on ITV chronicles the luxurious lives of the Crawley family, set in 20th-century England. The show explored cultural changes of the time, and with its detailed period setting, ‘Downton Abbey’ has garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase worldwide. Even the series adapted into two successful feature films that release in recent years. As per Daily Mail, the production company (Carnival Films and WGBH-TV) is hoping to bring back all its original cast. The series had a run for six years, starring an A-list cast including Maggie Smith (Harry Potter), Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill), Michelle Dockery (Anatomy of a Scandal), and Joanne Froggatt (Sherwood).

‘People loved Downton’

An insider commented on the exciting news to the Daily Mail stating, "There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about. There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution, and it has been much missed since it left our screens. There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favorite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended”. The show is expected to be back on-screen by next year, however, there is no official confirmation of the same. The final episode of season six showered with excellent viewership, peaking at 7.4 million.

Downton Abbey’s executive producer Gareth Neame declined to comment about the intent to bring the show back, alongside ITV. Nevertheless, a comeback of ‘Downton Abbey’ will be a breakthrough for ITV as the other similar programs such as Bridgerton and its spin-off, Queen Charlotte, quite gained applause. Also, ‘Downton Abbey’ had a two-movie sequel- ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’.
