In 'Hijack', Idris Elba plays a business negotiator whose skills are put to the test when he comes face to face with terrorists on a flight

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Apple TV+'s upcoming series ‘Hijack’ promises a nerve-wracking experience. The seven-episode miniseries stars Idris Elba, who never fails to enchant us whether he plays the enigmatic John Luther or takes on a blockbuster superhero role.

‘Hijack’ is possibly an exhilarating addition to your summer TV lineup. The show revolves around Sam Nelson (played by Elba), a successful business negotiator who finds himself distanced from his family. During a flight from Dubai to London, Sam’s negotiation expertise is put to the ultimate test as the plane is hijacked by terrorists. In a daring attempt to save lives, Sam must push the boundaries and build trust with both the hijackers and fellow passengers. Meanwhile, government forces work tirelessly on the ground to prevent widespread panic and uncover the true motives behind the hijacking. With Sam risking everything, ‘Hijack’ explores the high-stakes world of negotiation, trust, and the fight for survival.

Is ‘Hijack’ based on a true story?

Many fans are curious whether ‘Hijack’ is based on a true story. While the story revolves around a hijacked plane flying from Dubai to London and the efforts of authorities on the ground and passengers in the air, it is not directly based on a specific real-life event. However, it is undoubtedly inspired by true events of plane hijackings in history, aiming to depict the challenges faced by both ground authorities and those onboard during such crises. In contrast to other stories featuring law enforcement or skilled individuals, the Apple TV+ series focuses on Sam, an ordinary person who possesses the gift of persuasive communication rather than specialized skills. To become the hero of the story, he must rely on his ability to charm and influence others.

‘Fresh approach to thriller and hostage situation’

Idris Elba, who plays the lead, also served as the executive producer. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed how he “wanted to make something that has an impact as an actor obviously, but also as a producer in terms of what my taste is,” adding 'Hijack' "really ticked so many boxes.” He continued, “It takes a fresh approach to a thriller and hostage situation. There’s an amplified nature of having a ticking time bomb in a plane and what that does to human nature…It is also an examination of the procedures and attitudes [within the government and law enforcement in response to a hijacking situation], and that becomes a focal point of the storytelling.”

'Hijack' is set to air on June 28, 2023 on Apple TV+.
