'Taylor randomly signaling 'Sweet Nothing' isn’t about Joe Alwyn,' a fan theorized

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Taylor Swift recently had fans convinced that she was onboard with the popular fan theory of her song 'Sweet Nothing' being about Paul McCartney's love for his ex-wife Linda McCartney.

The pop star recently liked a 2022 tweet that quoted McCartney speaking about Linda's unique way of appreciating his songs.

"i would come back from a run with a poem to share and having listened linda would say 'what a mind' though the lines may not have been supreme, she wasn't merely being kind. she meant what she said. it's going to make a man feel good, that kind of a thing." - paul mccartney," the post read.

Several of Swift's fans were quick to believe that the 'Midnights' creator may have hinted towards 'Sweet Nothing' being partially inspired by McCartney's love story, which consists of the lines "On the way home / I wrote a poem / You say, 'What a mind' / This happens all the time," with her most recent "like" for the old tweet.

Meanwhile, many were convinced that Swift specifically liked the old tweet to dismiss the speculation of 'Sweet Nothing' being about her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who reportedly co-wrote the song under the pseudonym William Bowery.

Taylor Swift 'liking' old tweet sparks off new theories

Swift's X post 'like' about McCartney's love for Linda came shortly after her longtime collaborator and friend, Jack Antonoff, left fans shocked by revealing that the heartwrenching break-up song 'You're Losing Me' was written back in 2021, even though it was released as a vault track earlier this year.

While the revelation prompted several fans to believe Swift's relationship with Alwyn was going downhill since 2021 before they officially called it quits in 2023, others pointed out how the pop star also made 'Sweet Nothing' with Alwyn in 2022, which is seemingly a tale of their love for each other.

However, Swift's recent 'like' led to many fans believing that the singer dismissed the concept of 'Sweet Nothing' being about Alwyn and gave a nod to the track being inspired by McCartney and Linda's relationship.

Several fans also took to social media to share their theories and speculation about the recent events.

"Oh she’s trying to make it know sweet nothing is NOT about Joe lmao," a fan said.

"Making sure we don't think sweet nothing is about J0E," another added.

"OHHHH, SHE WANTS US TO KNOW," one commented.

"She said, let the slander continue," another joked.

"YALL SWEET NOTHING ISNT ABOUT JOE!!" an excited 'Swiftie' posted.

"It seems like it’s based off of Paul and Linda like the what a mind is something she used to always say to him and Paul and Taylor have spent a good bit of time together so I wouldn’t be shocked if she had heard from him about Linda doing this," they further explained.

One pointed out, "Taylor wore the Beatles tshirt twice in Mexico City… where she performed Sweet Nothing as a surprise song. She’s been trying to tell us!!!!!!"

While another said, "i can finally appreciate sweet nothing again."

One mentioned, "So Sweet Nothing is about Paul and Linda? Joe defenders need to give it up atp"

Before another added, "Taylor randomly signaling sweet nothing isn’t about Joe alwyn and we can continue our hate we love a real woman."

Is Taylor Swift's 'Sweet Nothing' really about Linda and Paul McCartney?

While Swift has never directly mentioned who 'Sweet Nothing' is about, the subject of the song has long been a topic of speculation among fans.

Even before Swift's latest X post like, some fans believed that the song was inspired by McCartney and Linda. Meanwhile, many were convinced it was written about her relationship with Alwyn.

An old Reddit thread titled, "Thoughts on Sweet Nothing being about Paul McCartney’s relationship?" said, "Paul McCartney was quoted as saying 'I would go out for a run, think of some words, get home from the run, write them down, and make a cup a tea for Linda,' said McCartney, who would bring it to her for breakfast. I'd make a little tray, and go up, and then I'd say, 'Hey, by the way, do you want to hear some poetry?' She'd always … she'd say, 'Yeah.' And so I wrote that poem. 'Blessed.' I would come back from a run. With lines of poetry to tell. And having listened, she would say 'What a mind.'"

"This pretty obviously connects to Sweet Nothing, where Taylor sings 'On the way home, I wrote a poem, you say, 'What a mind'; This happens all the time.' Additionally, Paul McCartney was thought to be seen at Wicklow Co. several times in summer 1971. So, do we think Sweet Nothing is about their relationship? Taylor and Paul have definitely interacted before, so I think it’s completely plausible," the post explained.

However, another user said at the time, "Taylor and Joe wrote the song together and they spent months in Ireland together while he filmed Conversations with Friends so she could be inside the show's quarantine bubble. That is where she recorded vocals for almost all of Red TV."

"Sometimes the simplest explanation makes the most sense, which would be that they wrote the song about their life together, especially in an album she explicitly said is about her life," they continued, adding, "If there is a connection to that specific McCartney story it would be Taylor seeing the similarities to her own relationship."

"They talked about life in their interview together. Taylor herself writes poems and songs and has talked about how Joe is now the first person she shares the songs with. We have video footage of her singing Call It What You Want to him," the Reddit user added.

One user said, "Paul and Linda had such a beautiful love story, and we know Taylor is a huge admirer of his. I absolutely buy this theory since I first heard it and it makes we really love the song"

While another mentioned, "Long time Beatles fan. When I first heard the song I honestly thought it sounded like a Paul song. I hadn’t made this connection with the lyrics. We know she and Paul have spent time together. This is a cool catch even if it’s just coincidental."
