Breakfast for dinner is a ritual I firmly believe should be participated in at least once a week and protected at all costs. The “most important meal of the day” is also the most contentious – debates still rage on what you should eat, when you should eat it, whether you should eat it at all. To which I say: be damned! Eat whatever you want, whenever you want. As a strictly savoury supporter, you won’t find me indulging in overly sweet pastries come dinnertime, but you will often find me whipping up mushroom crepes, toast with all the toppings or, as below, omelettes. In August, when tomatoes and peppers and courgettes and all the other colourful things are at their best, a summer garden omelette is the perfect way to start – or end – your day on a seasonal note. Speaking of summer’s bounty, other recipes in this week’s meal plan include a stir-fry with in-season courgette and sweetcorn, which makes for a quick, satisfying and veggie-packed meal for any day of the week. Equally light and bright is the bruschetta chicken delight or the grilled honey-lime pork chops with mango salsa, which celebrate the flavours of summer but are by no means restricted to the season. For something a little heartier, one-pan rice with prawns and salsa verde is easy to make, offers up serious flavour and, more importantly, saves on washing up. Summer garden omelette Bursting with a medley of fresh vegetables and aromatic herbs, this omelette is a perfect way to start (or end) your day on a sunny note. The combination of colourful bell peppers, courgette, tomatoes and fragrant basil creates a symphony of tastes that’s as visually appealing as it is delicious. With a hint of melted cheddar cheese and a fluffy egg base, this omelette is a celebration of seasonal produce. Serves: 2 Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 4 large eggs ¼ cup (60 ml) milk Salt and pepper, to taste 1 tablespoon butter ½ red bell pepper, diced ½ yellow bell pepper, diced ½ small red onion, finely chopped 1 small courgette, diced 1 small tomato, seeded and diced ¼ cup (30g) grated cheddar cheese 2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped Method: Crack the eggs into a bowl, add the milk, a pinch of salt and a dash of pepper. Whisk the mixture until well combined. Set aside. Prepare all the vegetables by washing, peeling and dicing as needed. Keep them ready for cooking. Grate the cheddar cheese and set it aside. Chop the fresh basil and set it aside as well. In a non-stick frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced red and yellow bell peppers, chopped red onion and diced courgette. Sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the vegetables start to soften. Add the diced tomatoes to the pan and cook for an additional 2 minutes. This helps to remove excess moisture from the tomatoes. Give the egg mixture a final whisk and pour it evenly over the sautéed vegetables in the pan. Allow the omelette to cook undisturbed for a few minutes until the edges start to set. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese evenly over one half of the omelette. Sprinkle the chopped fresh basil over the cheese. Using a spatula, carefully fold the other half of the omelette over the cheese and basil side, creating a half-moon shape. Let the omelette cook for another 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the omelette is cooked through but still slightly moist in the center. Gently slide the omelette onto a serving plate. You can garnish with additional fresh basil if desired. Serve the summer garden omelette with a side of toast or a fresh salad for a delightful summer breakfast or brunch. Zesty courgette and sweetcorn noodle stir-fry This dish is a harmonious blend of tender courgette, crisp sweetcorn and flavourful noodles, all brought together with a tangy sauce. Quick to prepare and bursting with fresh, vibrant ingredients, this recipe is perfect for those seeking a delicious and wholesome meal. Serves: 2 Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 15 minutes Ingredients: 200g egg noodles 2 medium courgettes, julienned or spiralised 1 cup sweetcorn kernels (fresh, frozen, or canned) 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 red chilli, finely chopped (adjust to taste) 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon lime juice 1 teaspoon brown sugar Salt and pepper, to taste Fresh coriander, chopped, for garnish Lime wedges, for serving Method: Cook the egg noodles according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, lime juice, brown sugar and a pinch of black pepper. Set the sauce aside. Heat the vegetable oil in a large wok or frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic, chopped red chilli and grated ginger. Stir-fry for about 1 minute until fragrant. Add the julienned or spiralized courgettes to the pan. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until they begin to soften but still retain some crunch. Add the sweetcorn kernels to the pan and cook for an additional 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the cooked egg noodles to the pan. Pour the prepared sauce over the noodles and vegetables. Gently toss everything together to ensure the noodles and vegetables are evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld. Taste and adjust the seasoning with salt, if needed. Remember that soy sauce is already salty, so be cautious. Remove the pan from the heat and garnish with chopped fresh coriander. Divide the courgette and sweetcorn noodle stir-fry between two plates. Serve with lime wedges on the side for an extra zesty kick. Bruschetta chicken delight This dish combines succulent grilled chicken with the fresh and zesty taste of classic bruschetta toppings. The marriage of juicy tomatoes, fragrant basil and tangy balsamic glaze atop tender chicken breasts creates a summery dish that’s sure to impress. Serves: 2 Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 20 minutes Ingredients: 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper, to taste 2 large ripe tomatoes, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, thinly sliced 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze or reduction 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick) ½ baguette, sliced diagonally Fresh basil leaves, for garnish Method: Rub the chicken breasts with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper on both sides. Place the chicken in a zip-top bag or a shallow dish and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes while you prepare the other components. In a bowl, combine the diced tomatoes, minced garlic, sliced basil leaves, balsamic vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set the bruschetta topping aside. Preheat your grill or a grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the marinated chicken breasts for about 6-8 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches 75C and the chicken is cooked through. Cooking time may vary based on the thickness of the chicken breasts. While the chicken is grilling, brush the baguette slices with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Toast the baguette slices on the grill for about 1-2 minutes on each side, until they’re golden and crisp. Set aside. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it from the grill and let it rest for a couple of minutes before slicing. Place a grilled chicken breast on each plate. Top the chicken with a generous amount of the bruschetta topping, allowing the juices to mingle with the chicken. Drizzle balsamic glaze or reduction over the chicken and bruschetta. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for an extra burst of flavour and visual appeal. Serve the bruschetta chicken delight with the toasted baguette slices on the side for a complete and delightful meal. One-pan salsa verde prawns with rice This vibrant dish combines succulent prawns with the zesty allure of salsa verde, all cooked together in a single pan. With the added bonus of rice soaking up the delicious juices, this recipe promises a quick, satisfying and tantalising meal that’ll become a staple in your kitchen. Serves: 2 Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 25 minutes Ingredients: 200g raw prawns, peeled and deveined 1 cup long-grain rice 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup chicken or vegetable broth ½ cup salsa verde (shop-bought or homemade) 1 teaspoon cumin Salt and pepper, to taste Juice of 1 lime Fresh coriander, chopped, for garnish Method: Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside. Pat the prawns dry with paper towels and season them with a pinch of salt, pepper and cumin. In a large pan or frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic to the pan and sauté for another 30 seconds until fragrant. Stir in the rinsed rice and cook for 1-2 minutes, allowing the rice to absorb some of the flavours. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth and salsa verde. Stir well to combine. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan with a lid and let the rice cook for about 15-18 minutes, or until the rice is tender and has absorbed the liquid. Once the rice is almost cooked, gently nestle the seasoned prawns into the rice mixture. Cover the pan again and let the prawns cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until they turn pink and opaque. The cooking time will depend on the size of the prawns. Squeeze the lime juice over the cooked prawns and rice. A grandfather is addicted to Lucozade despite having three heart attacks, and said it's harder to give up than class-A drugs. Garry Johnson, 65, began drinking coffee aged 12 and loved the caffeine buzz. The now-retired painter and decorator took cocaine and amphetamines in his teens, and after 15 years of on-off drug use went “cold turkey” when his son Sam was born in 1992. Keen to stay energised, he took up drinking 380ml bottle bottles of Lucozade Original, and now gets through eight a day. He's had the habit for 29 YEARS and it currently costs him around £150 a month. And at today's prices, his nearly three decade habit would have cost him more than £42,800. He had three heart attacks between 2012 and 2014 because of a hereditary heart condition, and doctors encouraged him to ditch caffeinated drinks. He gave up dairy and every other form of caffeine - but he still necks more than three litres of Lucozade a day. He said Lucozade is proving harder to give up than class-A drugs - because of the "after effect - like that lovely feeling in your mouth after you eat an expensive bit of chocolate." Garry, from Basildon, Essex, said: "I took cocaine every day but it was a piece of cake to give up - but I'd find it really hard to ever give up Lucozade. "I love it - not just the taste but the affect on my body makes me feel great. If I do go two or three hours without one, I fancy one... God knows how I'd be after two days.” He stopped using cocaine aged 30, when his son Sam, now 31, was born and went cold turkey because being a new dad was "stimulant enough". He started drinking Red Bull but found himself with migraines, and eventually moved onto Lucozade. He initially drank six a day, but has had eight a day for the last seven years. Now he goes to Tesco every day and buys one or two four-packs - depending how many bottles he already has stacked up in the fridge ready to drink. "I've always needed some kind of stimulant and eventually I realised Lucozade is perfect for me," he said. "After my heart attacks they told me to quit the energy drinks but I recently had new heart tests and my results are better than they've ever been. "I guess I've just found one that suits my body." But Garry said he doesn't even want to give up because it's a "part of his identity" - like a person's favourite shirt or their daily breakfast. He justifies the cost because he doesn't drink alcohol or smoke. He said: "£5 a day - that's less than a pint of beer today in some places." Where to find the best Guinness in London – and how to spot a bad one
Finding a decent pint of Guinness in London can all too often be a disappointing quest, from sour or bitter to poorly poured pints in plastic cups with bubbly heads. Some even say London is where Guinness goes to die. For those who feel they should at least enjoy drinking the pint they’ve paid ludicrous prices for, here’s a small, non-exhaustive and open-ended list of London pubs where you’re more or less guaranteed a scrumptious pint of what my friends and I call Guinny Jones. I’d like to add a disclaimer that I’m not an expert – though I am a quarter Irish and have taken the Guinness factory tour in Dublin – I just really, really like a good pint. So, I spoke to Ian Ryan, who runs an Instagram account dedicated to the capital’s crimes against the black stuff (@shitlondonguinness) and though he isn’t exactly short on blasphemous submissions, he’s also got a lot of insight into what makes a good pint and where to find it. Plus, Ian has a book coming out in October, A Beautiful Pint: One man’s search for the perfect pint of Guinness - he cares about the cause. Before we get to the pubs, here’s what we’re looking for in a pint. Texture: it should have a texture that withstands the “tilt test”, if you tip your glass slightly to the side and the head starts dripping down the side, it’s too watery. It should rise just above the edge of the glass in an oh-so-satisfying manner. Taste: Guinness has a malty sweetness and bitter hoppines, but it shouldn’t be too bitter, nor should it be sour. It should be rich and creamy, with slight aromas of coffee. If it tastes metallic, run for the hills. Head: a good pint of Guinness needs that signature creamy head. Ideally, it’ll be domed and around three-quarters of an inch. This is essential for balance and flavour. Also, if the head is littered with bubbles, it means it hasn’t been properly aerated and will almost definitely taste bad. Pour: according to Guinness Storehouse it should, of course, be in a Guinness or milk stout glass – it’s just wrong drinking out of a Stella or Beavertown. It should then be poured at a 45-degree angle up to the harp and then left to settle for at least a minute, but up to two if possible. It’s finished by topping up with the glass held straight. Red flags: according to Ryan, any sort of bubbles in the head are a big no-no. “Also, if you walk into a pub and no one is drinking Guinness, it could be a sign of bad things to come…” The Auld Shillelagh, 105 Stoke Newington Church Street, London, N16 0UD This Irish pub is most die-hard Guinness fan’s favourite London establishment, Ryan included. It looks tiny and unassuming from the outside but its narrow interior stretches far back into a surprisingly spacious garden. They have live music, great craic and, of course, perfect pints of Guinness. The best thing about the Shillay is that it doesn’t try too hard, which means it ends up absolutely nailing the pub formula. The Irish Times even named it the “most authentic Irish pub in the world outside Ireland”. If that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will. The Globe, 20 Morning Lane, London, E9 6NA A pub where you can enjoy Spoons prices without Spoons guilt, The Globe is a local’s pub through and through, but they’re also incredibly welcoming to newcomers. They’ve got live sports, pool, darts, karaoke, live music and pints of Guinness that pass the test at around the £4 mark, for zone 2, that’s practically unheard of. The Coach and Horses, 42 Wellington Street, London, WC2E 7BD Not far from Covent Garden piazza, The Coach and Horses is just far enough off the beaten track to not be inundated as most pubs in central are. This one-room Irish pub was once voted as the best Guinness in Britain by The Irish Post, plus they also sell hot roast beef sandwiches. Gibney’s London, 70 City Road, London, EC1Y 2BJ Staying open until 2am on a Friday, Gibney’s is an Irish pub based in the heart of Shoreditch. Upstairs they have “inventive small plates, Irish meats cooked over the open flame, fresh seafood and more from chef Richard Corrigan”, while downstairs they have Shit London Guinness-approved pints. The Cock Tavern, 23 Phoenix Road, London, NW1 1HB An unpretentious pub that prides itself on not being trendy, The Cock Tavern is a delight for both locals and tourists due to its proximity to Euston. Described by one reviewer as an “oasis of humour, personality and character” in the big city and endorsed by SLG, this rough-and-ready establishment knows how to pour a pint and provide good times. The Sheephaven Bay, 2 Mornington Street, London, NW1 7QD An “Irish bar with a conservatory, beer garden and no less than seven plasma screens for showing sports”, The Sheephaven Bay is easily the best Guinness in Camden. Lively atmosphere and friendly staff, what’s not to like? The Kenton Pub, 38 Kenton Road, London, E9 5BA Most of the pubs listed have unsurprisingly been of the Irish variety, so to throw a curve ball into the mix is the Kenton, a Norwegian pub in Hackney. There’s loads of cosy nooks and crannies, occasional DJs on a Saturday and the fantastic staff all pride themselves on pouring a proper pint. I asked general manager Morgan Ryan about what the secret to serving great Guinness is: “There’s not really a trick to it if you’ve ever poured a pint. In your twenties “Facials and skincare choices in your twenties should be preventative; aiming to optimise your skin’s health and supercharging collagen and elastin levels,” says Dr Thuha Jabbar, aesthetic doctor and founder of Almas Dental. “Hydrafacials are a great, non-invasive skin boosting treatment that deep cleanse the skin, brighten and reduce fine lines. Chemical peels and other non-invasive facial treatments are also great to improve skin tone and keep breakouts at bay.” Dr Sophie Shotter is also a fan of Hydrafacials (which start from £125 depending on clinic and location – available in over 1,300 UK and Ireland providers). They provide a deep clean, followed by extracting any impurities then moisturising the skin. Shotter says they can “help to give the skin a deep clean, minimising the risk of breakouts. LED [light therapy facials] is also an excellent choice. Many facialists will combine techniques for best results.” Dr Radmila Lukian, dermatologist at the Lucia Clinic, recommends microdermabrasion for people in their twenties – a process where fine crystals and a vacuum are used to remove dead skin cells. She says it’s “a great treatment for brightening dull skin and reducing pigmentation. Perfect for young adults.” In your thirties When you hit your thirties, this is the time when Shotter recommends “starting to think about upping the ante” with your skincare. She recommends facials which incorporate microneedling – a process where small needles pierce the top layer of your skin. “We often start to notice the early signs of ageing, as collagen loss kicks in through our thirties, and these treatments can help to stimulate collagen production leading to significant improvements in skin texture,” Shotter says. Lukian recommends a facial that incorporates dermaplaning – where a scalpel removes hair and dead layers of skin – which she says can help “combat free radical damage, stimulate collagen and improve skin texture”. In your forties When you reach your 40s, Lukian suggests LED light therapy and laser skin resurfacing treatments, as they “become more relevant to target wrinkles, stimulate collagen and improve skin elasticity”. She adds: “Laser skin resurfacing uses targeted laser energy to promote collagen production – revealing healthier, younger-looking skin.” Kim Kardashian, 42, is a fan of laser facials, and often posts about her treatments on Instagram. Jabbar adds: “Your forties are a great time to try laser treatments, to reduce the visibility of wrinkles and boost the overall health and appearance of your skin. From laser skin resurfacing treatments to IPL [intense pulsed light] facials that reduce hyperpigmentation and sun spots, lasers are a versatile and non-invasive option which can restore a youthful glow to your skin.” In your fifties and beyond “In your fifties and beyond, keeping focused on collagen stimulation with similar approaches to our forties certainly helps a lot,” says Shotter. “But in our fifties, we often start to notice many more visible signs of ageing, including pigmentation and skin wrinkling (elastosis). Using deeper chemical peels or resurfacing laser techniques, which may carry a little downtime, but are worthwhile for the results.” For this age range, she says skin hydration “is also often a higher concern than in younger years”, so hydrating facials are an excellent choice too. Mick Fleetwood says his Hawaii restaurant was ‘lost’ in devastating Maui wildfires
Mick Fleetwood has confirmed that his restaurant in Hawaii has been burnt down by the ongoing deadly wildfires in Maui. The Fleetwood Mac co-founder, 76, wrote in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that Fleetwood’s on Front Street “has been lost” as the fires rip through the historic town of Lahaina on the island. At least 55 people have died in the disaster, alongside more than 1,700 buildings and billions of dollars in property that have been destroyed. More than 14,000 people have been evacuated from Maui as of Wednesday. In his post, Fleetwood wrote: “Maui and the Lahaina community have been my home for several decades. This is a devastating moment for Maui, and many are suffering unimaginable loss. “Fleetwood’s on Front Street has been lost and while we are heartbroken, our main priority is the safety of our dear staff and team members. On behalf of myself and my family, I share my heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the people of Maui. “We are committed to supporting the community and those affected by this disaster in the days and months and years to come,” he added. Fleetwood opened his fine dining restaurant in 2012, featuring live entertainment and a rooftop area for customers to enjoy. The restaurant’s official Instagram account also shared a post, which read: “We do not have enough information at this time regarding Fleetwood’s on Front Street or any of our neighbours to share. Mahalo for your continued thoughts and prayers for our ohana, community and our first responders.” The wildfires began on Tuesday and have worsened throughout the week as a faraway hurricane fanned the flames, causing them to spread quickly. Governor Josh Green of Hawaii told a news conference on Thursday (10 August): “The full extent of the destruction of Lahaina will shock you. It does appear that a bomb went off.” US president Joe Biden issued a major disaster declaration and has ordered Federal aid to help local recovery efforts in the affected areas. He added in a White House statement: “Jill and I send our deepest condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones in the wildfires in Maui, and our prayers are with those who have seen their homes, businesses and communities destroyed. “We are grateful to the brave firefighters and first responders who continue to run toward danger, putting themselves in harm’s way to save lives.” A number of celebrities have also sent the people of Maui their well-wishes and have shared ways fans can help. Jason Momoa, who is Hawaiian, shared a post on Instagram to inform fans where they can donate to help with rescue efforts. He wrote: “We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and ohana on Maui who [have] been impacted by the recent wildfires.” Bette Midler tweeted this week: “The beautiful island of Maui, in the most beautiful state in the union, is suffering. My family and I send our deepest and most profound sympathies to everyone who has lost anything or everything in the Maui fires.” Former US president Barack Obama has also spoken out and said in an Instagram Story: “It’s tough to see some of the images coming out of Hawaii – a place that’s special to so many of us. What is the TikTok ‘carnivore diet’ trend and is it actually good for you?
When it comes to weird diets, TikTok is pretty notorious for spreading the word about them – and the latest iteration, the carnivore diet, is no different. The carnivore diet tag on the video-sharing platform has over a billion views, with followers of the diet dedicating themselves to meals consisting of a lot of meat (both cooked and raw), eggs and lumps of butter. With some content creators reporting immense fat loss and improved general wellbeing, how healthy is the carnivore diet? The pros “The carnivore diet, also known as the all-meat diet or zero-carb diet, is a dietary approach that involves consuming only animal products and excludes all plant-based foods,” says Dr Simon Theobalds, GP at Pall Mall Medical. Comparable to the no-carb, protein-heavy keto diet, it has the potential to boost some much-needed macronutrients, vitamins and minerals in your diet. “Red meat is a rich source of complete protein, providing all the essential amino acids the body needs for various functions, including building and repairing tissues,” says Theobalds. It can also boost iron levels: “Red meat is one of the best dietary sources of heme iron, which is more easily absorbed by the body compared to non-heme iron found in plant-based foods,” he says. “Iron is essential for transporting oxygen in the blood and supporting energy metabolism. “Red meat is also an excellent source of vitamin B12, a nutrient mainly found in animal products. Vitamin B12 is essential for nerve function, DNA synthesis, and the formation of red blood cells.” And it’s a good source of zinc, a mineral Theobalds says plays a vital role in immune function, wound healing, and cellular growth and repair.The cons So far, so good. But, where does it start to be damaging? “Red meat, particularly fatty cuts, can be high in saturated fat and cholesterol,” says Theobalds. “Consuming large amounts of saturated fat and cholesterol has been associated with an increased risk of heart disease and stroke.” Similarly, processed meats, such as bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and deli meats, have been classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). “This means there is strong evidence linking processed meat consumption to an increased risk of cancer,” he adds. It could also mean when you get sick, it’s harder to get well again, as it may encourage antibiotic resistance. “In many countries, livestock may be treated with antibiotics to promote growth or prevent disease,” Theobalds notes. “The overuse of antibiotics in meat production can contribute to antibiotic resistance, making it harder to treat bacterial infections in humans.” Despite the nutrients you can get from animal products, this diet could still lead to certain deficiencies. “Meat lacks essential nutrients found in plant-based foods, such as dietary fibre, certain vitamins like vitamin C, and minerals such as potassium. Long-term consumption of only meat can lead to nutrient deficiencies and related health problems,” he adds. A varied diet will also promote a healthier gut. “Aiming to incorporate 30 different plants into your diet each week is a great goal to have in mind,” says Anna Tebbs, registered nutritionist and head chef at Green Chef. “Having a range of plants in your diet will ensure you are fuelling the different gut microbiomes in your body. A plant-based diet tends to be higher in prebiotics, which gives the good bacteria in your gut extra fuel, and has an anti-inflammatory effect.” Is it worth it? With so many people posting about and adopting this diet, is it worth the risks for the benefits it promises? “While consuming meat can provide important nutrients, relying solely on a diet of meat and excluding other food groups may pose several risks,” says Theobalds. “A balanced diet provides essential nutrients, supports overall health, and reduces the risk of nutritional deficiencies and associated health problems. Before making any significant dietary changes, especially one as restrictive as an all-meat diet, it’s essential to consult with a registered dietitian or healthcare professional. They can help assess your nutritional needs, provide personalised guidance, and help you develop a balanced and sustainable eating plan that aligns with your health goals.
