Being vegetarian may partly be in one’s genes, study finds
A person’s genetic makeup can play a role in determining whether they can stick to a strict vegetarian diet or not, according to a new study. The research, published on Wednesday in the journal PLOS One, may lead to further studies on personalised dietary recommendations and the production of meat substitutes. While a large fraction of people self-identify as mainly “vegetarians”, they also report eating fish, poultry and/or red meat, suggesting there may be environmental or biological constraints that override one’s desire to adhere to a vegetarian diet, said scientists, including those from Northwestern University in the US. “It seems there are more people who would like to be vegetarian than actually are, and we think it’s because there is something hard-wired here that people may be missing,” study co-author Nabeel Yaseen said. In the study, researchers compared UK Biobank genetic data from 5,324 strict vegetarians – consuming no fish, poultry or red meat – to 329,455 controls. Scientists found three genes linked with vegetarianism and another 31 genes that are potentially associated. Several of these genes, according to the study, are involved in lipid (fat) metabolism and/or brain function including two of the top three (NPC1 and RMC1). “My speculation is there may be lipid component(s) present in meat that some people need. And maybe people whose genetics favor vegetarianism are able to synthesize these components endogenously,” Dr Yaseen said. “However, at this time, this is mere speculation and much more work needs to be done to understand the physiology of vegetarianism,” he said. While vegetarianism is increasing in popularity, vegetarians remain a small minority of people worldwide, with 2.3 per cent of adults and 1.9 per cent of children in the UK identifying as vegetarian. Scientists believe the driving factor for food and drink preference is not just taste, but also how an individual’s body metabolises it. Citing an example, they said when trying alcohol for the first time, most people would not find it pleasurable for the first time, but develop a taste because of how alcohol is over time. “I think with meat, there’s something similar. Perhaps you have a certain component – I’m speculating a lipid component – that makes you need it and crave it,” Dr Yaseen said. “While religious and moral considerations certainly play a major role in the motivation to adopt a vegetarian diet, our data suggest that the ability to adhere to such a diet is constrained by genetics,” he said. Scientists hope future studies will lead to a better understanding of the physiologic differences between vegetarians and meat eaters. They said such an understanding would enable personalised dietary recommendations and to produce better meat substitutes. Taylor Swift's private jet conspiracy theory might be the best we've ever heard
The recent dating rumours surrounding Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce have been unavoidable, particularly due to the pop star attending two of the NFL player's recent games - but there is a conspiracy theory circulating about her latest appearance. Cheering from the standings, the 33-year-old appeared to be in her element when she watched the Kansas City Chiefs against the Chicago Bears on September 24. Then she was spotted at MetLife Stadium on Monday (October 2) watching the Super Bowl winners defeat the New York Jets with celebrity pals such as Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and Sophie Turner. But it's this latest game that has the conspiracy theorists convinced that she attended the New York Jets game to detract from criticisms of her use of private jets. Confused on how this has been deduced? Well, the theory is all about SEO and search results. Basically, some theorise that Swift's recent football game attendance means that when people search "Taylor Swift jets" the latest reports of her at the match will appear at the top of the search results, rather than links to data concerning her use of private jets. Molly McPherson, a pop culture PR expert described the move as "brilliant" on TikTok. "Of course, she went to the Jets game for SEO reputation busting. So when you Google 'Taylor Swift and the Jets' you don't get the story about her jet emissions - which most of the articles were digital by the way - you're gonna get Taylor Swift at the Jets game," she said. @mollybmcpherson #stitch with @underthepink (Kristen) Now we have Taylor Swift’s OFFICIAL Response to the Private Jet CO2 Emission Plane problem from 2022. #taylor #taylorswift #seo #pr #publicrelations #fyp #prlady #thejets #nfl #airplane #crisiscommunication Swift has two multi-million dollar planes: a Dassault Falcon 7X and a Dassault Falcon 900, Insider reported and they have spent around 166 hours (seven days) flying back and forth from Swift's Eras Tour shows since March, according to aircraft-tracking website JetSpy. Last year, the Anti-Hero singer came under fire after sustainability marketing firm Yard revealed Swift’s private jet had emitted 8,293.54 tonnes of carbon dioxide, topping the list of celebrities with the highest amount of carbon emissions due to this. In the data breakdown, Swift had reportedly taken 170 trips and travelled an average of about 140 miles per flight. However, Swift's representatives defended her at the time and told the media that her private jet also gets loaned out to other people. “Taylor’s jet is loaned out regularly to other individuals,” a spokesperson said. “To attribute most or all of these trips to her is blatantly incorrect.” Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Leonardo DiCaprio in Paris at same time as 9 of his 'past and present' love interests
Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted in Paris with his rumoured new girlfriend Vittoria Ceretti – at the same time as nine of his 'exes'. The Hollywood actor attended Paris Fashion Week (September 25 - October 3) while his current interest Ceretti featured on the Chanel catwalk – alongside Gigi Hadid, who he has recently been linked to. Camila Morrone, who the Titanic star dated for four years, was in the front row. Then there were supermodels Helena Christensen, Toni Garrn, Naomi Campbell, Virginie Ledoyen, Eva Herzigová, and Amber Valletta, who have been rumoured love interests in the past years. In other Paris Fashion Week news, Jamie Lee Curtis publicly praised Pamela Anderson for attending a Vivienne Westwood show completely barefaced. Earlier this week, the Baywatch actress embraced her natural beauty, with Curtis writing: "THE NATURAL BEAUTY REVOLUTION HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN! "Pamela Anderson in the middle of fashion week with so many pressures and postures, and and and, this woman showed up and claimed her seat at the table with nothing on her face," she continued. "I am so impressed and floored by this act of courage and rebellion." Speaking to Elle last year, Anderson said the makeup-free decision came after her makeup artist Alexis Vogel died from breast cancer. "She was the best. And since then, I just felt, without Alexis, it's just better for me not to wear makeup," she said, adding that her beauty approach is now more "freeing, and fun, and a little rebellious."
